Celebrating Cortona: Images Inspired by Italy

IMG_3847Great Show & Gathering!

On February 21 almost 200 Cortona alumni, faculty past and present, and friends of the program gathered at the Decatur ArtHouse in Decatur, a close-in integral part of metro Atlanta.  The festive crowd enjoyed Italian wine and light Italian fare, shared memories, reconnected with old friends and met new ones.  Everyone experienced an exhibit of exceptional artwork inspired by 45 years of the UGA Cortona Studies Abroad program and the influence of immersion in Italian culture.

The group paused on a solemn note midway through the evening for a heartfelt tribute by former students and colleagues to Charley Morgan who passed away recently. He served as an inspirational leader and teacher on the faculty of both the Lamar Dodd School of Art and the Cortona Program for almost 40 years.

If you could not the join the opening reception, the exhibition is on view through April 10, Saturdays from 11-4 and by appointment. Lucky participants of the many events and classes held at the Decatur ArtHouse will have the pleasure of viewing the show as well. A special thanks to our generous hosts UGA Alumni Ron and Tennielle Bailey owners of the ArtHouse. This show and gathering was sponsored by CIAO, Decatur ArtHouse, the UGA Alumni Association – Metro Atlanta Chapter, UGA Cortona Studies Abroad and the Lamar Dodd School of Art.  Click to visit Decatur ArtHouse.Share your event photos, email them to: c.i.a.o.uga@gmail.com

The experience of living life in Cortona ultimately takes root within the artwork produced. This exhibition features artwork by both alumni and faculty of the program produced in or inspired by Italy.  The Cortona experience leaves an indelible mark on all who participate and this exhibition pays tribute to its 45 years of life-changing tradition.

CIAO (Cortona Italy Alumni Organization) is a unique subset of University of Georgia alumni. Most come to the UGA Cortona Studies Abroad program as Dodd Art students and many CED landscape design students participate each year. Some attend Maymester sessions in medicine, science, viticulture, and humanities. Many others attend from top academic institutions around the country and quite a few participate in a special 10 day “Experience” in art and Tuscan culture. All leave with a special lifelong connection with Cortona and an exceptional bond with other Cortona alumni.
